Just This Day
28th November 2007

Message from Stephen Cottrell, Bishop of Reading - Following my escapade with the egg timers at Reading Station earlier this year and then the book exhalting people to do nothing I have received a huge amount of correspondence and interest on this theme from all over the place. In particular, I was contacted by a Christian woman from Warwickshire who had been thinking along similar lines and has been moved to attempt to get the whole world to stop and sit still for a few moments on one day. She has named the campaign "Just This Day". On Wednesday 28th November 2007 the whole world is invited to sit still for a few minutes.

Although the day has Christian origins as you will see it is appealing to people of all faiths and of no faith to build some contemplation and reflection into their lives.

I have been invited to take part in a celebration to mark the day at St Martin in the Fields. Can I ask you to invite your congregations to also set aside some time for stillness on Wednesday 28th November. If you wish you can find more about this campaign at http://www.justthisday.org/

An appeal for stillness and silence is something that we can happily participate in alongside people of other faiths and with all people of goodwill. We can also be praying that the peace of Christ comes to our world.
